WRITING
Dorothy Max Prior writes mostly non-fiction: stories, essays, memoir, cultural commentary, and arts journalism.
She also writes performance and soundscape texts, poems, and lyrics.
Max is currently writing a book with the working title Sex is No Emergency – a collection of 12 autobiographical stories from the frontline of punk, performance art and queer London life in the 1970s.
Some of this material has been reworked and extended from previously published essays and short stories, e.g. from Punk is Dead: Modernity Killed Every Night (Zero Books, 2017), Showboat: Punk, Sex, Bodies (Dashwood, 2016), and the liner notes for Rema Rema, Fond Reflections (4AD, 2019).
Max is the editor of Total Theatre Magazine, the curator of its archive, and a regular contributor to the journal over the past 25 years: totaltheatre.org.uk/archive
She has also contributed to many other specialist performance and music magazines and fanzines over the years, including On Tour, Mailout, Zig Zag, Vague, Ripped and Torn, and TransFM. She is the former editor of Animations magazine, Circus Arts News, and the User's Guide series of performance journals.
